Siddesh Lad dropped, Shreyas Iyer to lead Mumbai in Vijay Hazare | Cricket News

MUMBAI: Known as Mumbai’s ‘Crisis Man’ in recent years, middle-order batsman Siddesh Lad, who has led the side too, was dropped from Mumbai’s 22-man Vijay Hazare Trophy squad, which was announced by the Salil Ankola-led selection committee on Wednesday.
Clearly Lad has paid the price for his and the Mumbai team’s poor show in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy.
The 28-year-old managed to put together just 27 runs in four games in the tournament, with a highest score of 21, at an abysmal average of 6.75, as Mumbai lost four games on the trot to crash out at the league stage itself.
Considering his fantastic record in List A cricket, where he has scored 1124 runs in 38 [email protected], with four hundreds and three fifties, and in the Ranji Trophy, where he has rescued Mumbai many times from trouble, Lad, who has been a regular part of the Mumbai team since 2013, would definitely feel that the selectors could have shown more faith in him in his lean patch. He’s the only experienced player to have been left out of this squad.
Chinmay Sutar, who scored a hundred for India under-23 against Hong Kong in the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh, has been included.
Meanwhile, having missed Mushtaq Ali due to a shoulder injury, India’s limited overs batsman Shreyas Iyer will return to lead Mumbai in Vijay Hazare, with discarded opener Prithvi Shaw as his deputy. Having been dropped from the Indian team and then squad after failing (0 & 4) in the first Test at Adelaide against Australia, Shaw would be keen to find some form in the tournament.
The tournament will kick off from December 20. Placed in Group D, Mumbai, guided by new coach, former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar, will travel to Jaipur to play against Delhi, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Pondicherry in the league stage. They launch their campaign on February 21 against Delhi.
Along with Lad, pacers Arjun Tendulkar and Krutik Hanagavadi were dropped too.
The squad: Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Prithvi Shaw (Vice-Captain), Yashaswi Jaiswal, Akhil Herwadkar, Suryakumar Yadav, Sarfaraz Khan. Chinmay Sutar, Aditya Tare, Hardik Tamore, Shivam Dube, Aakash Parkar, Atif Attarwala, Shams Mulani, Atharva Ankolekar, Sairaj Patil, Sujit Nayak, Tanush Kotian, Prashant Solanki, Dhaval Kulkarni, Tushar Deshpande, Siddharth Raut, Mohit Awasthi.
