Parliament Budget Session: President Ramnath Kovind condemns violence during farmers’ protest on Republic Day | India News

NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday condemned the violence during the tractor rally taken out in the capital on Republic Day by the farmers protesting against the three farm laws and termed it as “unfortunate”. He also defended the central agri acts.
Addressing the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on the opening day of the Budget Session, the President said the insult of the tricolour and Republic Day was very unfortunate.
He said, “The national flag and a holy day like Republic Day were insulted in the past few days. The Constitution that provides us freedom of expression, is the same Constitution that teaches us that law and rules have to be followed seriously.”
The President said implementation of the three farm laws have been put on hold by the Supreme Court. The government will respect whatever is the decision of apex court, he added.
He said over 10 crore small farmers have started getting benefits of the three agri laws. Several political parties have supported these reforms, he added.
Kovind said, “Small and marginal farmers are also a priority for my government. To support such farmers in their small expenses, around Rs 113,000 crore have been transferred directly to their accounts under PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi.”
He further said, “My government would like to clarify that the rights and facilities that were available before the enactment of the three farm laws have not been cut short. In fact with these new agricultural reforms, the government has provided new facilities and rights to the farmers.”
Kovind noted that more than 10 crore farmers are benefitting from farm laws passed seven months ago. The laws have currently been stayed by the Supreme Court and the government will respect that, he said.
He said the centre was working constantly to remove misconceptions related to farm laws. “After extensive deliberations, Parliament had passed the three important farm laws seven months ago,” he said.
Meanwhile, 19 opposition parties led by the Congress boycotted the President’s address to express solidarity with the protesting farmers. However, during the address, Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu constantly raised slogans demanding repeal of the farm laws.
