Long list of countries to receive India’s gift of Covid vaccines | India News

NEW DELHI: India rolled out a long list of countries around the world who would be getting vaccines from New Delhi, some as grants and some as commercial exports.
MEA announced over the next few days, India plans to gift 100000 vaccine doses to Oman, 500000 doses to Caricom countries, 200000 doses to Nicaragua and 200000 doses to the Pacific Island states.
On Thursday, India gifted 100000 doses of vaccines to Bahrain, the first Gulf country to receive it from India.
MEA spokesperson said, “We will continue to supply vaccines to partner countries over the coming weeks and months in a phased manner. Decisions on these supplies will, of course, be calibrated against the requirements of the roll out of the Covid-19 vaccine at home.”
This comes after India completed the first round of vaccine grants to its immediate neighbourhood, with Sri Lanka getting its share on Thursday. The only country left in the neighbourhood (apart from Pakistan) is Afghanistan which is scheduled to get vaccines as soon as conditions are more propitious.
Srivastava said, India would send “further supplies on a commercial basis” to Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Canada, Mongolia, etc. “Further, we are going to supply 1 crore (10 million) doses to Africa and 10 lakh (1 million) to UN health workers under GAVI’s COVAX facility.”
Commercial exports of vaccines have been made to Brazil, Morocco and Bangladesh, with Myanmar also buying 30 million doses of vaccines from India.
India has been the first responder in the neighbourhood during the pandemic, from ferrying HCQ to personal protection equipment to vaccines as well as food.
“India sees international cooperation in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic as its duty, we have played the role of the first responder in our neighbourhood as well as undertaken supplies to countries beyond,” the MEA spokesperson said.
From 20 January, India has gifted over 55 lakh doses of vaccines in the neighbourhood — Bhutan (1.5 lakh), Maldives (1 lakh), Nepal (10 lakh), Bangladesh (20 lakh), Myanmar (15 lakh), Mauritius (1 lakh), Seychelles (50,000), Sri Lanka (5 lakhs) and Bahrain (1 lakh).
“These supplies are based on requests from these countries.”
