Is it okay to drink water with meals? Here is what Ayurveda recommends

Our daily habits are shaped by our routine (dincharaya). Our routine can make a lot of difference in our way of living; making some minor tweaks can solve multiple health issues over a period of time. One habit that can help us solve various problems is staying hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Some of us have water even between our meals and some of us like to end our meals with a glass of water. But which is the correct thing to do?

Here is what Ayurveda has to say.

Drinking water before a meal

Many of us prefer having a glass of water before our meals so that we consume less calories when we sit down for the meal. But as per Ayurveda, drinking water before having your meals can lead to weakness and emaciation.

Drinking water after a meal

Most of us finish our meals with a glass of water. It makes us feel satiated and gives the feeling of finishing a meal. But doing so can lead to obesity.

Having water in between meals

As per Ayurveda, it’s best to have water sip by sip during meals. This helps to break down the food and aids digestion.


It is recommended to always drink warm water with meals for better metabolism and digestion. You can also add dry ginger powder, vetiver roots, acacia catechu or fennel seeds to the water you consume in between meals.
