Recently, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported two instances that took place in different gyms at Hawaii and Chicago, IL. According to new research from the CDC, it was found that gyms could be the hotspot for COVID-19 outbreaks if people refused to wear face masks, even if they follow social distancing guidelines.
In Hawaii, 21 people contracted the virus after an infected cycling instructor conducted classes for 3 days and later tested positive. As per reports, the cycling stations were placed more than 6 feet apart, but no one wore masks.
Similarly in Chicago, 55 of 81 people who attended indoor high-intensity fitness classes during the summer of 2020 contracted COVID-19. That said, of the infected people, nearly 85% wore their masks infrequently during classes, and 78% attended at least one class while they were still contagious.
In an interview, the CDC said, “The increased respiratory exertion that occurs in the enclosed spaces of indoor exercise facilitates transmission of SARS-CoV-2.”
